Spring Wears the Clothes of Winter and a Smile

Douglas Moss by Brooke Stone

Spring wears the clothes of winter and a smile
the coats and capes of gray, billowing rain

the pale muffler of chilly daybreak mist
the hat brimmed round with frost, or even hail

the fashion seems unchanging month to month
but yet, what of the smile which lingers now

is it sardonic, mocking our desires
for blue, for bright, for green, for fresh, for young

or is there something more in sympathy
with vernal dreams, silent like crocuses.
